Our May athlete of the month is a long time member who has been nothing but determined and dedicated from the beginning. She tends to switch up her schedule frequently, so many of you may know her. She loves to climb as one of her favorite hobbies outside of the gym. Climbing translates inside the gym as well and gives her a bit of an edge. She may just be one of the most adventurous members we have! Our May Athlete of the Month is:

Lauren Berman

  1. Where are you from originally?
I moved here from Detroit around 12 years ago.
  2. If not from Pittsburgh, what brought you to Pittsburgh?
I got laid off after the crash in 2009 and it felt like it was time to try somewhere else, my dad grew up here and i had some really good memories of Pittsburgh from when I was a kid. Came for a visit and just fell in love with it.
  3. Where do you work?
I’m an attorney with the Pennsylvania Utility Law Project, we’re a state-wide legal aid program representing low income Pennsylvanians. We do direct representation of utility customers who need help staying connected to service, we also work on policy and intervene in rate cases and other proceedings at the Public Utility Commission to ensure that all low income Pennsylvanians have access to safe and affordable energy and water.
  4. What is your favorite hobby?
I love climbing, mostly indoors, but we’ve done a couple of outdoor climbing trips and we’re training for another on in the fall.
  5. How did you discover CrossFit?
My mom was doing CrossFit out in Wyoming and she thought I’d like it, so I gave it a try!
  6. When did you start CrossFit?
    September of 2018, I think?
  7. Why did you start CrossFit?
I had had a tough year personally, and while I’m usually pretty active, I had gotten out of shape and hadn’t really had time to focus on exercise and my health. I had also been training for the Pittsburgh Marathon (half) and got injured, so i needed something that wasn’t running!
  8. What is your favorite thing to do in CrossFit?
I USED to love deadlifts, but we’re taking a break from those. I love running, working on pull-ups, cleans.
  9. What is your least favorite thing to do in CrossFit?
Probably thrusters, I don’t love burpees, but I can’t really do them right now anyway.
  10. What is the number 1 thing you want to get better at?
Currently, need to work on getting my cardio back where I want it, generally, I really like working on the gymnastics movements.
  11. What is your favorite part about coming to CrossFit at Industrial Athletics?
Other members and coaches are all great, I also love that I don’t have to think about what to do. I know I’m going to show up and get a good work out.
  12. What is your favorite CrossFit WOD?
I can remember the name, but there’s a longer AMRAP with really short sets of pull-ups, squats and push-ups maybe? I like the longer workouts with shorter reps schemes, that just keeps you moving.
