Alison Giest is our February Committed Club Honoree, and if you’ve ever walked into the 7:15 or 9 a.m. classes—or even a Saturday session—you’ve probably seen her putting in the work. She’s also a familiar face at Sunday Open Gym when she can squeeze it in. Despite a busy life outside the gym, Alison shows up with steady commitment, balancing her schedule in a way that keeps her training consistent and her energy contagious. She’s a reminder that progress comes from simply showing up, and she does it week after week.
Why is fitness important to you? Â
I’ve always been “active” –whether stretching, going on a random run, or dancing around my apartment–but I didn’t start thinking about “fitness” until my late 20’s. Starting with regular yoga classes, I became grounded by the routine of classes, more confident as small growths were achieved, and energized by the relationships and community. My nonstop movement became “fitness”. But truly, no fitness program has captured all the aspects of fitness that I love as much as CrossFit at Industrial Athletics.
What motivates you on the days you don’t feel like working out?Â
I remind myself I never regret working out. And, especially because I work from home, it’s motivating to know I’ll get to have a real in-person conversation to start my day.Â
How do you stay consistent during busy and stressful times?Â
I aim to workout or be active 5x/week, but I’m flexible about what that means.Â
What is your biggest obstacle you face in staying committed?Â
Not having enough (or thinking I don’t have enough) time!
How do you balance fitness with the rest of the things in your life (work, family, friends, etc)?Â
Again, I’m flexible. If I stay up late working, I might sleep in and do the 9am class the next day. If I don’t have an hour for class, I do a quick HIIT workout at home. If I’m travelling with a friend that loves to run, I run with them.Â
What role does mental health play in your physical journey?Â
A big one! It keeps my anxiety at bay while building my confidence.Â
What role does diet and nutrition play in your fitness commitment?Â
On the one hand, eating healthy keeps me feeling good mentally and physically. On the other hand, if I get a few solid workouts in each week, I have zero guilt about indulging in less healthy options.Â
What advice would you give to someone struggling to stay committed to their fitness goals?Â
Find an activity you like and people you like to work out with.
