September 2015 Athlete of the Month

By September 4, 2015One Comment

This month, we awarded the September 2015 Athlete of the Month to a member who has shown a lot of dedication to Industrial Athletics over the last few months.  First, he has convinced four of his friends to start CrossFit.  Second, he has pushed himself to improve his abilities and start representing Industrial Athletics in local competitions.  Finally, along with participating in Industrial Athletics social events, he makes an effort to show up to classes when he knows new potential members or drop ins are there to make sure they feel welcome and receive a full Industrial Athletics Community experience.  The September 2015 Athlete of the Month is:

BRANDON STIRPE

1.      Where are you from originally?

A small town called Newark, NY which is east of Rochester, about 25 miles. Moved to Halifax, PA when I was 14, though.

2.     If not from Pittsburgh, what brought you to Pittsburgh?

In 2006, I started school at the University of Pittsburgh; I’ve been here ever since!

3.     Where do you work?

Numotion. Sounds like a name of a boy band but it’s a durable medical equipment company where we work with people with disabilities to find the perfect mobility device to assist in completing their desired activities of daily living.

4.     What is your favorite hobby?

Outside of crossfit, I enjoy video games (from NES all the way to Wii U and every console in between), trying new restaurants around the city, and doing man projects.

5.     How did you discover CrossFit?

In grad school, my friend Ashlee and I came across CrossFit when researching gyms in the Pittsburgh area.

6.     When did you start CrossFit?

Around 3 years ago and have been doing it on and off since then. It’s been more consistent since January though.

7.     Why did you start CrossFit?

Couldn’t get motivated to go to the gym on my own. Also wanted to meet new people who shared common fitness goals!

8.     What is your favorite thing to do in CrossFit?

Muscle-ups. Even though I’m not the best at them right now, completing even 1 rep feels very rewarding.

9.     What is your least favorite thing to do in CrossFit?

Any kind of weight ‘over-head’. My lack of core strength (I’m workin’ on it!) makes it tough to make gains.

10.  What is the number 1 thing you want to get better at?

Pistols.

11.  What is your favorite part about coming to CrossFit at Industrial Athletics?

I’ll chose the cliche answer of, the community. I’m serious though; from wod’s and competitions to cookouts and the nights we decide to run around town, I’ve gained new friends who I can’t wait to make more stories with!

12.  What is your favorite CrossFit WOD?

I like workouts like Christine, where it’s almost equal parts endurance and strength:

3 rounds for time
500m row
12 Body Weight Dead Lift
21 Box Jumps
