Athlete of the Month for July 2016

It is time to announce the Athlete of the Month for July 2016.  This individual is a relatively new member of Industrial Athletics.  However, in the short time she has been here, she has made quite an impression.  As a regular attendee of the 4:30pm class, we don’t think we have ever seen her without a smile on her face.  She is always positive, upbeat, and encouraging other.  She approaches every movement with the upmost concern for proper form and range of motion.  And, she has a sweet homemade Industrial Athletics/CrossFit Alloy water bottle.  The Athlete of the Month for July 2016 is:

CAROL PERSIN

1.      Where are you from originally?

I am originally from the suburbs of Philadelphia, near Valley Forge Park / King of Prussia mall.

2.     If not from Pittsburgh, what brought you to Pittsburgh?

I came to Pittsburgh to attend Duquesne University for elementary education and met my husband (John) there.

3.     Where do you work?

I work at Keystone Oaks School District as a Technology Coach. I help teachers implement technology into their lessons and also work for the tech department.

4.     What is your favorite hobby?

I sing at Duquesne’s chapel. I also love Broadway musicals.

5.     How did you discover CrossFit?

I discovered CrossFit through Coach Melissa, who works with John. I attended a few community classes last year.

6.     When did you start CrossFit?

March 2016, right after Industrial moved locations.

7.     Why did you start CrossFit?

Two reasons: 1. I had been running and weight lifting on my own for about 6 months and wanted to up my intensity.  2. John had been going since November and I didn’t want to be left out from the fun!

8.     What is your favorite thing to do in CrossFit?

I like pistols… a skilled movement I can do well.

9.     What is your least favorite thing to do in CrossFit?

I am tough on myself, so anything I don’t feel good at. I struggle with cardio, especially rowing and running. I like to challenge myself and go to “unappealing” workouts to get better.

10.  What is the number 1 thing you want to get better at?

I can’t pick one! I am working on my grip strength for bar work and on my handstands. On my CrossFit off days, I want to get back to running.

11.  What is your favorite part about coming to CrossFit at Industrial Athletics?

The community. I love meeting new people and working out together.

12.  What is your favorite CrossFit WOD?

My favorite workouts are those with built in rest. I also like WODs with low rep counts. I will always pick 4 rounds of 10 reps over 40 reps.
