Our December Committed Club Honoree is Craig Lear, and his consistency truly sets him apart. In just about six months at the gym, Craig has made training a non-negotiable by intentionally scheduling it into his week and showing up regularly to keep himself moving. He doesn’t stop when the class ends either—Craig stays on top of any homework assigned through Coach’s Corner, using it as a tool to support the goals he’s working toward. Week after week, he shows up ready to put in the work, push himself, and keep progressing. Craig’s commitment is a great example of how consistency and effort, even over a short time, can make a big impact.
Why is fitness important to you?
Fitness is the foundation that governs everything you’re able to do, and how well you’re able to do it. Whether at the workplace, or your recreational activities. Staying fit, enables you to enjoy the things you want to do, without limitations
What motivates you on the days you don’t feel like working out?
In my profession, you have a responsibility to look after your fellow officers, as well as the public you serve. That requires staying in a good physical condition. Knowing that their safety & security might be decided based on this definitely keeps you motivated.
How do you stay consistent during busy and stressful times?
I try my best to make it work.. Especially when it’s busy and stressful. I think that’s when it’s the most important to stay consistent. This really goes a long way for your peace of mind. Workouts give you a chance to “reset” and get back into a normal rhythm again.
What is your biggest obstacle you face in staying committed?
My work is probably the biggest factor, since it can be subject to sudden changes due to unexpected events. But I’m fortunate to have a good group of people to work with, that share the responsibilities. That being said, I can usually find one way or another to stay on task.
How do you balance fitness with the rest of the things in your life (work, family, friends, etc)?
I generally look at what I have to accomplish each week between my work & family responsibilities and weave my workout in between. For the most part, it stays pretty consistent. My family and friends are a very understanding group, since they have their workout programs as well.Â
What role does mental health play in your physical journey?
I feel that mental health is important to me, in order to feel more balanced overall. I believe your mind should benefit just as the body. For me, it’s meditation, music, & fly fishing. It’s a departure from everything else, and very therapeutic.Â
What role does diet and nutrition play in your fitness commitment?
Nutrition is very important to me. I generally keep tabs of everything in my diet. I measure and track a lot of what I eat, how much and when. I stay pretty dedicated about it.
What advice would you give to someone struggling to stay committed to their fitness goals?
Staying on any fitness program is a marathon, not a sprint.. It’s going to take time, but that time invested will grant you health, happiness and a peace of mind that you’ll find now where else. Â
