Some people have a way of making even the earliest mornings feel a little brighter, and Leslie Anders is one of them. Our September Committed Club Honoree shows up to the 5:15 a.m. class with a smile, a strong work ethic, and a knack for turning hard work into something fun. Before heading off to her role as an elementary school teacher with Pittsburgh Public Schools, Leslie starts her day by moving with purpose, singing along to the music, and bringing positive energy to everyone around her. Her consistency, dedication, and ability to find joy in the process make her a standout member of our community.
Why is fitness important to you?
Fitness is important to me because it helps me feel stronger, healthier, more confident, and less stressed. When I work out (even at 5:15 am!!) I am more energetic throughout the day and my mood is more on an even keel.
What motivates you on the days you don’t feel like working out and how do you stay consistent during busy and stressful times?
When I don’t want to work out – especially on those cold, dark mornings of winter – I think about how great I feel after a workout – how accomplished I feel and how much better I am mentally. It helps me stay consistent during those busy and overly stressful times. On the tougher days I treat myself with a hot mocha latte, which also gets me through the longer runs. I also love the community at the 5:15 class, so that helps me get out of bed.
What is your biggest obstacle you face in staying committed?
The biggest obstacle I face is letting work (4th grade math teacher) overrun my life. It is so easy to use work as an excuse to sleep in and get to work a little early. But I know that if I make the effort and get to IA, I will be a better, more patient teacher and I will have energy to hike with my dog, camp, knit, and enjoy my personal life.
What role does diet and nutrition play in your fitness commitment?
Eating a healthy diet and exercise go hand in hand. When I’m working out regularly, I tend to eat healthier (except for those mochas!). Better meals and less junk food fuels me for the high-intensity workouts.
What advice would you give to someone struggling to stay committed to their fitness goals?
IA is a wonderful place to work out! The coaches are very knowledgeable, friendly, and supportive. During recent health issues, our coaches knew how to modify my workouts and continually checked on me to make sure I was okay. I didn’t have to skip any workouts!! Make the commitment and stick with it – it’s worth it!!
